The Classroom Without Walls
INSIDE THE VILLAGE SCHOOL GOLD COAST, WHERE COOLANGATTA BECOMES
PART OF THE CURRICULUM

Children learn in different ways. Some need to move, touch, explore and ask questions until they land on the answer themselves. At The Village School Gold Coast, these qualities are not treated as interruptions to learning, they are embraced as part of it.
Located on Level 2 of The Strand Shopping Centre, the school deliberately draws upon the Coolangatta community on its doorstep. The beach, river mouth, parks, library, sporting facilities and local businesses become places where meaningful learning can happen, extending classroom teaching rather than replacing it.

After three and a half years navigating funding, approvals and accreditation, primary teacher and mother Bianca Nuss opened The Village School as an accredited independent primary school on 12 July 2021. Nine children attended that first day. Five years on, Founding Principal Bianca leads around 75 Villagers from Prep to Year 6 across five small classes. Her belief is simple: education should be rigorous and meaningful while preserving the magic of childhood.
Bianca also believes resilience is a muscle that must be practised. In her TEDxBurleigh Heads ED talk, she described courage as the decision, bravery as the action and resilience as the outcome. At The Village School, safe does not always mean comfortable. Within supportive environments, children experience manageable challenges, take calculated risks and discover how capable they are.
The annual swimming carnival brings this philosophy to life. Instead of counting laps in a pool, Villagers gather at Tallebudgera Creek for a supported open-water crossing, cheered on by their school community. It is courage, bravery and resilience in action.
Prep children learn in their own Foundation class, while the remaining classes are intentionally banded across year levels, allowing extension and targeted support to happen side by side. Teachers use the Australian Curriculum, assessment and observation to plan each child’s next steps.

Sharing a mixed-age class does not mean every child automatically completes the curriculum taught at the older year level, nor is extension simply racing ahead. It may involve greater depth, complexity, independence and applying knowledge in unfamiliar ways. When foundations are secure and assessment shows readiness, more advanced concepts may be introduced. Children needing consolidation receive targeted explicit teaching and additional practice.
English and Mathematics are taught explicitly each day, while Science, Humanities and Social Sciences and other curriculum areas are often connected through rich inquiry — the Village way.
Place-Based Education is woven through daily Village Adventure Time, or VAT. Some adventures extend classroom learning; others deliberately make room for exploration, experimentation and play. Learning here is not always neat, quiet or predictable. It can be noisy, sandy, wet, challenging and gloriously messy, and often that is where the richest learning happens.
Coolangatta beach provides a naturally STEAM-rich environment of wet and dry sand, rocks, boulders, driftwood and water, where children build, test ideas, solve problems and adapt when something does not work.

During weekly Wet Adventures, Villagers may enter the shallows, get wet and play in their clothes before changing at school. Alongside the joy, they develop confidence, independence, judgement and a deeper connection with their coastal environment.
Signature programs turn learning into something children can hold in their hands. Through Balcony to Business, children design products, cost materials, set prices, forecast sales and pitch their ideas to the Principal for an initial investment from the school. They create their products at school, advertise and trade at Market Day before repaying the investment and deciding how to use their profit.
Through Balcony to Bowl, children grow produce, explore native Australian ingredients, design three-course menus and transform learning spaces into restaurants, preparing and serving their families.
There is no formal uniform; children wear practical clothing that lets them move and participate comfortably. Educators are known by their first names, reflecting a culture built on connection, trust and mutual respect. The school’s values are captured in I CAN: Intention, Curiosity, Awareness and Nurture.
Learning begins with the heart before the head, so every day starts with a Connection Circle, helping Villagers feel safe, connected and ready to learn. Small classes and strong adult support allow staff to know children deeply, not only as learners, but as people. Wellbeing and emotional regulation are treated as foundations for academic growth, not afterthoughts.
No single model suits every child or family, and The Village School is unapologetically distinctive. It is not defined by what children cannot do, but by what becomes possible when they are known, challenged and given meaningful opportunities to use their learning.
The Village School Gold Coast is located on Level 2 of The Strand at Coolangatta, next to the cinemas.
