Beating the winter zoomies

When the temperature drops and the days get shorter, keeping kids entertained can start to feel like an Olympic sport. Throw in a few rainy days and some serious pent-up energy and suddenly the walls are closing in.

Luckily, our region is packed with high-energy indoor adventures — from flying trapezes and roller rinks to escape rooms, arcade games and indoor ice skating. Whether you’re chasing a rainy-day rescue mission or simply trying to burn off some serious kid energy, there’s no shortage of family fun — whatever the forecast says.

THAT’S HOW WE ROLL

An oldie but a very solid goodie, roller skating is one of those joyful, timeless activities that never gets old — for kids or for parents brave enough to lace up alongside them. There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about the whoosh of wheels on the rink, the music pumping, and the wobbly-legged determination of a first timer finding their glide.

Across the region, you’ll find a great trio of rinks to choose from. Rollerworld Lismore has been a firm indoor favourite for decades, while Epic Skate in Tweed Heads delivers the same kind of retro fun for northern families. Both offer skate hire, disco sessions, lessons and party bookings that make it easy to keep the gang entertained for hours.

Head to the Gold Coast and Rollerama at Carrara Markets keeps the wheels turning with adult sessions too — because mum and dad deserve a turn in the legwarmers. Go on. You know you want to.

FLYING HIGH

Ever dreamt of flying on a trapeze? Circus Arts Byron Bay is the place to do it. With an action-packed timetable of classes and holiday programs for all ages and skill levels, it’s easily one of the most exciting indoor adventures in the region.

Little ones can tumble, bounce and play in Tiny Circus classes, while older kids can tackle Ninja/Parkour, Flying Trapeze, Acro and Gymnastics. Grown-ups aren’t left out either, with adult Circus Fit, Aerials and Handstand classes on offer, plus Byron’s only indoor climbing wall for anyone keen to test their courage. Fair warning: one visit is rarely enough.

RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY

Ten-pin bowling is a winter staple for good reason: it’s fun for the whole family, requires zero experience, and produces a very satisfying amount of noise when you knock those pins flying. Throw in the neon lights, the thud of the ball, and a competitive sibling rivalry in full swing, and you’ve got the makings of a very good afternoon.

Ballina Ten Pin Bowl is a local favourite, with mini putt putt adding extra fun between frames, while Tweed Tenpin offers cosmic bowling sessions and party packages perfect for energetic crews. On the Gold Coast, Go Bowling Ashmore delivers the full entertainment package with multiple lanes, arcade games and bumper lanes for younger bowlers still mastering their aim. Cue the victory dances.

IN THE ZONE

It might give parents mild sensory overload, but there’s no denying the joy of an afternoon at Timezone — and honestly, the arcade machines are hard to resist for grown-ups too. It’s full-throttle entertainment as kids bash, race, shoot and bumper-car their way through a dazzling array of games, collecting tickets and trading them in for prizes that somehow feel wildly important in the moment.

With locations across the Gold Coast and beyond, Timezone is one of those places that works for everyone from tiny gamers to hard-to-impress tweens — and is especially handy when the weather has completely shut down outdoor plans. Load up the game card and let the afternoon disappear.

START YOUR ENGINES

Rev up the winter school holiday energy at Slideways GoKarting — the ultimate indoor go-karting destination and, frankly, one of the most exhilarating afternoons you can have without leaving the Gold Coast. Burn rubber around a 450-metre indoor track that lets kids drift, overtake and battle it out for go-kart supremacy across three thrilling levels.

The Cave of Darkness track delivers an extra shot of adrenaline, while dual karts mean even younger speedsters can get in on the action alongside a grown-up. Expect big smiles, serious competition, and immediate requests for “just one more race”.

THINK YOUR WAY OUT

Escape rooms are the ultimate indoor challenge for families who love puzzles, mysteries and a little adrenaline. Whether you’re breaking out of prison, solving a mystery, or unravelling a paranormal puzzle, the one-hour countdown creates an electric atmosphere that has the whole group completely absorbed.

Fox in a Box, Padlocked and Escape Hunt on the Gold Coast are among the region’s most popular escape room destinations, offering immersive experiences with adjustable difficulty levels — easier for younger families, more challenging for seasoned players. There’s no age limit, children under seven play for free, and the rooms range from mildly suspenseful to properly spine-tingling. Choose your adventure wisely.

COOL ON THE ICE

Here’s something the kids won’t be expecting: ice skating... in Queensland! Right inside Paradise Resort on the Gold Coast, Planet Chill is a 10x15m indoor rink that’s open to resort guests and visitors alike, making it one of the region’s coolest winter outings — literally.

Whether your little ones are lacing up for the very first time or you’re reliving your teenage fantasy of Olympic gold, it’s a seriously fun outing for the whole family and a brilliantly unexpected addition to the winter school holiday list.

BOUNCE IT OUT

If there’s one guaranteed way to burn through every last bit of winter wiggle energy, it’s a trampoline park. Foam pits, dodgeball courts, ninja courses and wall-to-wall bouncing combine to create the kind of outing that ends with happily exhausted kids and an unusually peaceful evening at home. You’re welcome.

Bounce Inc in Burleigh Heads and Springloaded in Banora Point are both brilliant options, with sessions catering to different age groups and dedicated toddler times for little jumpers. Whether they’re practising flips, launching into foam pits or simply bouncing themselves silly, it’s big-energy fun from start to finish.

Check online for current session times and school holiday specials. Booking ahead is highly recommended — these places fill fast when the weather cools down.
